This phase involves the construction of the main Museum building, and implementation of the Master Plan, landscape parks and surrounding site infrastructure. A joint venture between Egypt’s Orascom Construction Industries (OCI) and the Belgian BESIX Group was awarded the contract for this phase of the GEM in a deal valued at $810 million which was signed on January 11th, 2012. Works started on February 1st 2012 and will be completed in July 2015.
This phase includes the building of the exhibition galleries, archaeological study storage and educational centre; library and mediatheque, children museum, children school and outdoor children recreational gardens, museum for special needs cultural and educational centre containing 3-D cinema, theatre, arts and crafts workshops for adults and children; in addition to retail shops, food and beverage and recreational areas. This phase will also include the fitting-out of the museum's components and specially the Data Centre which will feed the ICT facilities distributed over the entire building.
